Our third sketchbook image highlights an Amtrak train passing through one of Milwaukee’s rusting industrial bridges. The black and white sketch was first. Then, colored markers randomly in the background. Then, using a little magic from the new Photoshop app on iPad, we exaggerated the fluorescent highlighted effect. When will be able to take that train to Chicago again!
Our second drawing in the sketchbook series looks North toward the Milwaukee Public Market with Third Ward buildings and the freeway underpass in view. For this illustration, it was drawn twice...once in pencil and the other in marker, at different times. Then, the colored background was also created separately. When all three images were superimposed, this is what happened. We will produce this on a postcard next year!
This is the first in our Milwaukee sketchbook series—a quick drawing of the skyline facing the lake. We tried a technique which started with the black and white sketch. On a separate sketchbook page, we used markers to fill in the colored areas, but with no reference to the first sketch. The overall effect is random. This might be coming to a sweatshirt someday!
